No Pants Subway Ride 2013

The No Pants Subway Ride: New York is an annual light-hearted prank arranged by Improv Everywhere and held on the subway in January. Because of the size of the New York version of this prank, there are six meeting spots for participants. These locations are Hoyt Playground in Astoria, the Old Stone House in Brooklyn, Foley Square in Downtown Manhattan, Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, Great Hill in Central Park in Uptown Manhattan, and Maria Hernandez Park in Williamsburg.

The prank began in 2002 with seven participants in New York City and has grown to tens of thousands of participants each year in over fifty cities around the world. The prank goes as follows. Small groups of participants board the subway at various stops around the city, designated by Improv Everywhere leaders. Everyone boards the train like normal, pretending not to know any of the other pranksters.

At the stop before they are supposed to get off, they proceed to take off their pants and put them in their backpack (or similar storage item). The goal is to act like this is completely normal and act as if the pants were just becoming uncomfortable. The pranksters get off at their designated stop, pantsless, wait for the next train, then board again. From here, pranksters are supposed to act as if they simply forgot their pants and are surprised by how many other people were as forgetful as themselves.

The object of the prank is to be silly and act as if wearing no pants on the subway in 20-degree weather is totally normal. Therefore wearing overly crazy or revealing underwear is discouraged as it ruins the integrity of the event.
